So much good in this episode. But what astonished me was how thinly-veiled the racism was from the Dillon people towards the predominantly Black community and team of Gatlin. All the talk about it being “inner city” and “dark,” and “you know how those people are.” I’m not criticizing the show at all. On the contrary. I think it’s probably a pretty honest, unvarnished portrayal of what things can be like between fairly segregated towns like that. And the way it complicates all sorts of feelings for Smash’s family, having moved away from Gatilin to Dillon for complex reasons ... some of which I’m sure have to do with perceptions of Gatlin being a bad place because it’s mostly Black, and Dillon perceived as “safer” because it’s mostly white. And I loved the time between Jason and Tyra. They are really, truly friends and it’s almost the first time we’ve seen Jason feel kind of relaxed in that way.
