This is about as elliptical as story-telling gets. They basically just throw us into a post-apocalyptic world 10 years in the future. Then they provide only a small amount of explanation about how the world got there. This will probably all make more sense after you've seen Season 2. There is an amazing transformation in the relationship between Topher and Adelle DeWitt. We have never seen them relate to each other even remotely like this. Adelle is like a mother or an aunt or a sister caring for her mentally ill family member. The show is telling us... an enormous amount of catastrophic events have taken place... and these are not even the same people any more. They have been beaten down, terrorized, and transformed... as has the entire planet. It's a nightmarish flash forward. Is this episode brilliant? Or an indication that the writers went insane? Both? I don't know.

This was originally shown at the ComicCon panel. I avoided spoilers and waited to get my DVD set... and it was so different, I thought Fox had put on an episode from the wrong series onto my DVDs, maybe something from the BBC. Given Fox's history with Firefly AND this show, it didn't seem unreasonable. It wasn't until they found the actual dollhouse set that I was reassured. I wish, I wish, that this episode had been interspersed within the first season. If the pilot had ended with Felicia Day crying in a hellscape... One of the major criticisms of the show when it aired was that it didn't do enough to show how terrible the idea of this tech was. Causing a zombie apocalypse? Doesn't get much more terrible than that.

The pilot wasn't aired either. This episode shows a scene that was taken from the pilot, i.e. when Adele drinks tea with the new client. Many scenes from the pilot are peppered across S1. Some may be re-shot. Not certain. If you haven't seen the full pilot, it's worth checking out.
