So let's talk taxes. (Patreon)
Content
There's really no avoiding this one, I guess.
Starting in July, Patreon is applying sales taxes to certain pledges. This isn't something that they can fight against, nor something we as users of the platform can protest; it's law, and they have to comply with it.
As far as I'm concerned regarding everything, I think most of my pledge tiers should be safe; all I offer is links to early access stories to begin with, and while digital, it doesn't fall under anything such as a downloadable PDF. Nothing physical should hit us, but I would still advise checking the other patrons you support just to see if it affects you.
The only concern I have is what's labeled as 'bonus content', which is found in the $5 tier. I want to look into this a bit further, but as it's content not found elsewhere online and I don't intend to release it, it may count? But as it falls under 'streaming content', does that really count here?
I'm not sure, but until I find out otherwise, I wouldn't be too concerned. The only major upset is that this hits on the patrons as well, and is likely going to impact a number of creators.
As Patreon plans to release some tax settings at the end of the month, I'll be looking into that and seeing what I can do to help everyone.
