The first three died in the accident. If I remember correctly, it's not a stream but just a small amount of water from the rain. So they can't follow it to see where it goes. The professor left to find some help and it can be a good decision. Since he is alone, a grown up and a pe teacher, he can move more quickly and walk more distance. Since it's a crash accident, they shouldn't move away from the car. If they moved and rescue find the car, they wouldn't be able to find the girls in the forest. Since no one knows how deep the forest can be in the group, moving away and losing themselves can pretty much lead to the death of the whole group. You know that search can take a lot of time, especially in a mountainous region. They can only conduct search through helicopter to find signs of the accident. Finding them in a week or two is already fast. So waiting less than that is not a wise decision. At least, as long as they are in the time limit when a rescue is still searching for them, waiting there is a good decision considering the age (middle schoolers) and the location.
