HELLO!

This week's WYLT is brought to you by the letters ASDF and JKL; as well as our friend and coworker Anthony, who is really into Keyboards ("Keebs") and has feedback ("Feebs") for Josh and his ticky-tacky predilections towards the clicky clackies.

Meantime I just wanna know how much it all costs! (It's quite a lot.) Do YOU want to know how much this costs or tell Josh his ideas are wrong?

Well listen to and/or watch this episode!

- Laura (Work)

Keeb nerds, represent! ✊ https://media.makecoolthings.com/wp/2018/12/ergodox_capped.jpg

Jack ?

Sometimes I forget how deep in the nerds I am until I hear how NEW certain things are to other people.

Jack ?

I'm with Josh on this. I love some good clicky type-writer sounds from my keyboard, but I assume it's because there's nostalgia attached to it.

For anyone wondering if there's a point to mechanical keyboards other than aesthetics: after developing repetitive stress injuries in both wrists, I switched to a mechanical keyboard with extremely light (but still tactile) switches, and after two months I experienced a dramatic turnaround. The force required to press a key absolutely makes a difference to the delicate tendons in your wrist, as does the amount of force a key "kicks back" at your wrist as the spring compresses. If your work requires you to do any significant amount of typing, I can't recommend a wrist-friendly mechanical keyboard highly enough (especially if you can write it off on your taxes or get your company to pay for it). One thing I can't recommend at all is the *community* surrounding mechanical keyboards, or at least the most visible parts of it. The Reddit mechkeys Discord in particular is, 1) almost indispensable for getting information you need to make informed decisions, and 2) ludicrously toxic and full of the worst kind of hobbyist + gamer gatekeeping to be found anywhere. There are parts of the community that are civil, welcoming, and informative, but you have to go digging to find them, and they’re not geared toward new entrants to the hobby.

Oh! And here is exactly the record for *lubing your switches*. I can't post a link, but search Discogs for "Mechanical Keyboard Sounds - Recordings Of Bespoke And Customized Mechanical Keyboards". The label it was released on (Trunk Records) is one of the weirdest and coolest labels out there. It's a real record you can actually buy in real life, because this universe is definitely not a simulation AT ALL.
