Thanks so much for spending the time answering my question! I have a lot of great ideas now with Tales from the Loop for a family game.

QUESTION: Most advice for new DMs revolves around the unititiated's tendency to over-prepare. In the face of that omnipresent advice, my question is: what sorts of things, if anything, do you ALWAYS have prepared? What do you always like to have on hand that constitutes your personal DMing skeleton?

OTHER QUESTION: "use the characters' backstories" is common advice. Could you go into more detail on precisely how to do so? Is it even possible to elucidate without specific characters and dynamics to work with?

Question: I DM a group of five, but we're often missing 1-2 players. What are some clever ways to hide PCs when they're not really at the table or reunite them when it's convenient? I rather enjoy finding clever ways to do so, but it's not always easy to work it in. Is a clever connection even necessary in general, or should I just get comfortable announcing "A wizard did it" when it's necessary?

I had essentially the same Q! Hope this gets discussed... more generally, I'd like to get some good out-of-the-box ideas for dealing with a party whose composition can vary from session to session, not just missing players, but also introducing new ones in interesting ways. I think this is probably an issue for a lot of older gamers with busy schedules...
