I talked about it a bit on the site already, but Shogun is sort of incomprehensibly good.  It don't make no kinda sense!  But it might make a little more sense when you consider that the book it's based on is a Goddamn masterpiece.

The author, James Clavell, literally fought against the Japanese in World War II.  An officer in the Australian Navy, he became a Japanese prisoner of war after being shot in the face in 1942.  He bounced between a couple prison camps (!!!) before ending up in Changi Prison in Singapore.   He doesn't remember his time in the camp as bad.  In fact, this goofball refers to his second prison camp as being like a "university" where he had unique access to the broadest possible spectrum of people and nothing but time.

I pray that when I am captured by my enemies, I have the equanimity to be cool about it.  But this last line is…  well, I already told you in the strip.

And, hey!  I saw that the information went out about that Top Secret Meetup, and I hope to see you there.  I will bring my…  well, I will bring myself.  I hope this is sufficient!  But I will also bring several of my powerful allies with me, and together, we shall escape the weight of darkness.

(That is a song by Agalloch.  It is very good, but unless you're into black metal, you might want to stick with that one track.  Also, it's very much a headphone song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb0IKDXWG-U).

As always,

The thing about Shogun is that the feudal time was a pretty interesting time (plus the culture is so different). When I was younger, I was obsessed (plus I'm half Japanese so it sort of played into it). I remember finding some games from KOEI that were basically strategy games where you played a daimyo and fought your way to becoming shogun. The mix of political intrigue and machinations, armies fighting, supply chains and resource management, and random things like ninja assassinations and earthquakes made it an interesting period. Plus, the BTS talked about the level of detail they put into things like making sure mannerisms were accurate for the time even things like how someone would slide a door, etc. Just well-done.

Hey team. Will Penny for your thoughts (or some other iteration of DLC / Strip podcast) be returning? The last episode was in October last year.
