you kind of got One minute back VERY wrong... it's about a guy that walks on his love cheating on him and wishing he could move the clock one minute back to before he found out so that he could remain in blissful ignorance....

To be fair to Theo, on Onew's name, you might have been pulling the j sound from his real name Jinki- us fans use both his stage name and real name when we refer to him so you might have seen us calling him Jinki in some of the comments. (and as someone who ults Onew if you want to check out his solo stuff his Circle album from last year is one of the best albums I have heard in music in general not just kpop) One Minute Back is probably my favorite non ballad bside from them. Love the experimental feel with the stacked almost barbershop vocals, it's a song that has always felt like 'this is SHINee boiled down to the essentials' to me. It's funny that you both read it as a cuter love song type because I've always read it as a song about the girl cheating on them lmao. Asking to go one minute back to before they saw her on the street with another man so they can pretend not to know that she is cheating on them. Also you guys talking about how much you love the theatrical elements of their performances really makes me want to recommend the group VIXX, the true theater kids of kpop, to you! Selene 6.23 was written by Jonghyun and was inspired by the super moon (that happened on that date) in that the earth and moon are so close and yet can never reach/touch each other. All the members at different times after 2017 have talked about how Selene 6.23 is a super special song to them and one of their favorites, it along with An Encore became very important songs to Shawols and SHINee to honor Jjong. And in the first episode of their SHINee's Back Show from 2018 they show Jjong's handwritten drafts of the lyrics to Selene 6.23 that also have cute little doodles of the moon on them!

Jonghyun did indeed write Selene 6.23, he was inspired by the super moon that happened on that date and the song tells the story about a man who falls in love with the moon but the distance keeps them apart. Taemin later gave it another meaning and said it's like SHINee and international Shawols, that even though distance keeps us apart, our love for one another is always there and we are always together in that way.

Jonghyun didn't only make sad songs, he has 80+ songs credited to him, they go from sad, to happy, to goofy, to sexy, to comforting and everything in between.

Jonghyun's passing didn't put them into hiatus, in fact, they had a concert 2 months after. the concert was already scheduled and they were contemplating about canceling it (as well as disbanding...), but Jonghyun's mom convinced them to go through with it, so they did. they changed the entire concert in 2 months (including changes to all the cheoreo and deciding on who would cover Jjong's lines, with Taemin covering most of them) and made it into a concert in memory of Jonghyun where they could honor him with Shawols. Key said that he truly believes they wouldn't have survived as a group if they hadn't done it. later that year they released The story of light album trilogy for their 10th anniversary. The hiatus came after that, and it had nothing to do with Jonghyun, it was because they had to start enlisting, Taemin was left alone for almost 3 years to carry the SHINee name and keep it alive. the lack of recognition has a lot to do with SM never actually WANTING them to succeed, they were never meant to last, they were created as an experiential group they could try things on for the group they ACTUALLY wanted to create (EXO), as soon as EXO debuted, SM packed SHINee up and sent them to Japan for a full year to get out of the way and let all the attention be on EXO, even though it was right when SHINee's popularity was rising in Korea and this move severely hindered it. the reason SHINee managed to remain as successful as they are is mostly down to the members, they VERY quickly understood that if THEY weren't proactive no one would help them so they worked 5 times as hard to make sure EVERYONE knew them, and made so many connections. SM very rarely did much to help or promote them, when they had the comeback in 2021 for example, almost all of the (many) promotion interviews and shows they were on they got through their own connections, not through SM. SHINee became a household name in Korea DESPITE SM not because of them. they even had to pay for editing of their MVs and such from their own pockets. I'd say that the 3 biggest reasons why SHINee isn't as big as they honestly SHOULD be are: 1. SM's lackluster (borderline damaging at times) management. 2. The time they debuted. You have to remember that 2nd gen was a very different time than 3rd gen, Youtube was just STARTING when they debuted... 3. When the BIG boom of popularity for k-pop started, SHINee was in their military hiatus period. just very bad timing. but despite all of that SHINee ARE actually still much bigger then you seem to think, between 2017 and 2022 SHINee ranked number 3 in the list of k-pop artists that brought the most money to S. Korea in those years (only behind BTS and EXO) and those were years that they were mostly on hiatus, for most of that time it was JUST Taemin, you can imagine what it's like with 4 of them (VERY) active now. SHINee are huge in both Korea and Japan, most Japanese don't even consider them to be a foreign group, they sold out Tokyo dome, 55k sits for a FAN MEET, not even a concert. and it was just released that SHINee are currently the most highly paid per member artist in SM (that doesn't even include solo activity), each member earns more than Taeyeon, BoA, and every member of NCT, EXO, Aespa and Red velvet. Which is not surprising, because every time it was time for contract renewal, SHINee came with their lawyers and beat SM to the ground ever since the first one. by the second one they're name came first on the contract (which in this type of contract, the order of the names signifies which party has more power..). SHINee are bigger than you think, it's just the international fandom (out side of Japan) that needs to catch up a little, and even there, you'll be surprised. and after saying all of that, they DO deserve much more recognition.

Preach, couldn't have summarized it better. Nothing against EXO but SM definitely shown a lot of favoritism towards them. F(x) was done even dirtier than SHINee though. They ditched them as soon as Red Velvet debuted and now SM acts as if they never existed. It's a miracle that such an 'experiment' as SHINee even survived that long, thanks to the boys never giving up. At least they are much more respected nowadays...

Ofra Cohen

Absolutely not EXO's fault, it's SM and their shiny new toy mentality. And yes, f(x) was done dirtier, they where created for the same reason as SHINee was, only for Red Velvet, but I'd argue that unlike SHINee, they didn't take matters into their own hand and do it themselves (not that they should have had to have needed to in the first place, but SM sucks, so...) and so, when SM dropped them like yesterday's garbage, they didn't really have much of a safety net. And it didn't help that girl groups in SM generally aren't treated as good as boy groups in the first place....

Agree with the other comment that Jonghyun had a very diverse catalog as far as his songwriting/producing credits, and it doesn't do his music justice to say that he mostly wrote sad songs. I would say his lyrics are often emotionally sensitive/touching, but not necessarily sad. That being said he also has a lot of fun, flirty, and/or sexy songs too! His "She Is" album is a great example of that. On that note his solo music would. be great to check out especially since he was involved more than most idols in the producing/writing process.
