The Full Party!

Here are three kids playing out their first session of D&D! Elana is the one with the fly swatter, Alex is throwing handmade confetti, and Mario is the one holding the butter knife under the blanket.

Do you remember your very first session? How old were you? Children love to play make-believe. Perhaps RPG games are just a more formalized way of playing make-believe that people of all ages can enjoy. Dice and rules are there to resolve ambiguous situations (I jump up the tower – no you can’t jump that high!), but the rest is all fun, creativity, and imagination! Don’t you agree?

The kids here certainly do, as they are completely into character. Can you guess what class each kid is playing?

Elena is a fighter or a paladin of some sort wielding a sword, Alex is a wizard casting Glitterdust, and Mario is absolutely a rogue. My first game was when I was twelve—my mom played back in the 80s and introduced me to 4e. She DMed for me, my brother, and a friend of ours for six years before we moved away but I still haven't lost my love for the game. <3

I was introduced to D&D in 1990, when I was twelve. A friend taught me how to play, but we didn't have any of the books, so it was a strange approximation from memory. Around that time, as well, my friends and I did a lot of pretend games, where we ran around with stick weapons, and narrated adventures inspired by some of our favorite Nintendo games (mostly Castlevania). I've now played every single edition of the D&D (except the original white box), and explored most of the official settings, but still prefer to make up our own worlds.
