I adore the comparison between Medusa and Annabeth this episode gives us. Despite giving their lives to Athena, they are both punished by her for something Poseidon/Percy did. They are punished, not him. I really like the parallel with episode 3 where Percy states, "if the mission required someone to push me down a flight of stairs for it to succeed... you'd want someone who won't hesitate when they do it." In this episode, Annabeth tries to get him and Grover to descend the stairs and carry on the mission, but Percy is like absolutely not! This episode begins to highlight their fatal flaws: Annabeth's hubris, which she shares with her mother and Percy's excessive personal loyalty. He can't let Annabeth remain behind.
