This episode is a very common season favorite, or at least first half of the season favorite. It's definitely considered one of the early stand out episodes of the show. It's an emotional one overall and like you said, it's an incredibly sad story for those firefighters. They do a great job of making you feel that tragedy in that scene between Coulson and the third firefighter. And the compassion and empathy Coulson shows in how he handles it exemplifies such a big part of what makes him so beloved -- both by fans and in canon -- his heart. Mildly ironic considering what happened to him. As for Fitz's heart, I would certainly agree that he has some manner of a crush on Skye and I've always thought of that lingering moment with him after Simmons leaves his bunk as him starting to realize that he may be a little bit in love with his best friend. So you're at the very least not alone in that interpretation. Also, while there is a certain goofiness to Ward's skydiving scene, I think the squinting probably had more to do with the fact that there's a reason people wear goggles to skydive and there was probably a very strong fan just absolutely blasting in Brett Dalton's face. Speaking of Ward, I know what he meant by it, but his snub to Skye about everyone looking "clean on their first go around" doesn't actually make sense because Skye did not look clean on her first go around. Like, he achieved his goal which was obviously just to make Skye feel shitty so it worked in that way, but it doesn't actually /work/ if you think about it at all. Obviously that's not remotely important but I couldn't stop thinking about it.
