One of my favorite things about R. Cane is that the "addiction" mechanic is simply the gameplay benefit it provides. Like, it's just super fun to do a cool lightning smite. Disco Elysium does something similar where it doesn't track addicition to drugs, they simply provide insane benefits so you go out of your way to do them instead of using your money on other things.
