Community Challenges are an opportunity to practice ACTUALLY USING the stuff you're learning here to write some music, the more important way to get these concepts stuck in your head. Learning theory without writing music is like learning spanish without ever speaking it with someone.

This week's challenge is a little trickier that usual: Write something in Phrygian Mode, with B as the root note. If you want more of a challenge, only write something using the bottom 4 strings on the guitar (the 4 thickest strings.

If this challenge seems like TOO much, try out an easier challenge from the previous 64 I've posted so far.

The idea is to write whatever you can based on your free time, skill level, and interest. You don't have to write a whole song and you don't have to use recording software. It could be a chord progression, a melody, a bassline or a riff recorded to your voice memos. Just try something and have fun doing it!

This was my first time doing a live community challenge and I think I'd like to do it this way from now on. If you have any community challenge ideas, throw them in the comments below! After 65 of these, it's getting more difficult to come up with new and exciting challenges!

Also, leave me a comment if you've been participating and haven't felt comfortable posting to the community forum. I won't pressure you to post what you've written, I just want to know if folks are writing stuff at home even if they aren't sharing!

How about creating incidental music for a scene from a movie or book. This could be used a few times, on various agreed/assigned scenes. Previous non-technical challenges seem to have yielded some great results from the community.

I have two ideas for future challenges: 1) A challenge where you Scott write the backing track and we have to write something on top of it. 2) This one is probably not very practical. Collaborative challenge! 2 persons (or more!) work together (remotely) on the same piece of music.
