Hi Everyone,

If this is your first Community Challenge, here is the what, why, and how:

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY CHALLENGE?

A community challenge is the musical equivalent of a napkin sketch. The idea is to use the prompt (this week it's "write something outside your comfort zone" for example) to throw a little something together - not a whole song, not even a complete thought. Wherever you're at in your guitar journey, sit down and try a little creativity.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

The single most important thing missing from most music education is creativity. Imagine taking a class to learn a language only to be told how to make the sounds and which phrases to memorize. You would not be speaking the language - you'd be repeating memorized sounds. Music theory is like grammar, semantics, and spelling: writing music is like speaking the language.

The single most important part of my musical journey has been writing music and being creative. The more you practice being creative, the more value you bring to a band. Being creative effects every aspect of your musical journey and MAKES THEORY MAKE SENSE (because you're actually using it.)

HOW?

Write a little something and record it using either your cell phone or computer, or use recording software like I did. Post what you've written to The Community Forum.

Check out the Lesson Archive for more Community Challenges - you’re welcome to participate on any past Challenge at any time!
