New here? Wondering where to start? Click here

Hi everyone!

I forgot to post this yesterday. Somehow that sewage leak last Thursday threw my off groove. But hey, better late than never! In the spirit of late-ness, this is a Halloween themed challenge.

This week's Community Challenge is: Write Something Spooky

This is one of those open-ended assignments! There are numerous approaches to this task. As always, keep in mind that your creation does NOT need to be a full blown song, it does NOT need singing, lyrics, words, etc. It does NOT need multiple parts or multiple sections. It can be incredibly simple, recorded to a cell phone. If you want to get fancier, you are more than welcome to do so, but I just want to emphasize that you are welcome to participate in whatever capacity you want! "Low pressure" is the idea here.

Post your creations on the community forum.

Here are some fun things to consider:

1. Spooky film music often uses a lot of chromatic movement (moving in half steps like C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F# etc)
2. Spooky music often uses some fully diminished chords
3. Sometimes these fully diminished chords have an octatonic scale over them (WHWHWHWH)
4. Spooky music sometimes has augmented triads that move up in whole steps like Faug Gaug Aaug Baug C#aug D#aug Faug - and you could play a whole tone scale with this (WWWWWW)

Everything in this list is somewhere in the realm of "atonal" music, in the sense that it doesn't line up with most of what we've talked about so far on this Patreon. How exciting!

You're welcome to experiment with this weird list above or completely ignore it and write something spooky in your own way. If you think I should do some lessons about things like whole tone scales, octatonic scales, and weird whole step movements of augmented chords, let me know in the comments.

Have fun and interpret "spooky" in whatever way you like. The rules here are simple:
1. Write something new
2. Try to write something spooky
3. Post what you've written on the community forum
4. Along with your music, write a little about what methods you used to try to sound spooky!

Also, if you try writing and you feel you just can't write something spooky, post whatever you write anyway and talk about what you're struggling with! We can help
