Hi Everyone,

This Practice Thought is all about my practice method. I think it's easiest to apply this method to learning songs, but the more you integrate this practice method into your practice time, the more you'll notice the massive impact it can have on the way you play guitar.

A lot of self-taught guitar players start learning guitar as a way to unwind, relax, and drift off into music land. While this state of mind is important and useful - especially for performing or getting yourself into a good, relaxed mood - it is not useful when you're trying to learn something new. This practice method is designed to help you get the most of the time you spend trying to improve your technique and general hand, arm and body awareness around your instrument.

I know this is a departure from learning a specific technique or music theory concept, but this is at the core of my approach to improving my actual guitar skills. I hope you enjoy it.

I've attached a PDF of this graphic, which is a nice summary of this lesson:

There isn't specific homework for this lesson, but if you're learning a new song (or a new technique, concept, etc) and you'd like to document your process of integrating this practice method, please do so on the community forum. If you have developed your own version of this method, let's start a discussion about it on the community forum.

This reminds me of how I learned to play songs on the guitar with Rocksmith. The songs in Rocksmith are splitted in sections and if you play the sections from very slow to fast you learn the song if you combine all the sections. And afterwards you "feel" that some sections that are harder just go without a problem. And sometimes the day after you play a certain part better, it's like if the brain processed it. ;)

Love this approach! So simple, but makes complete sense. I've been applying this "effort breakdown" method for years in other aspects of my life and have seen tremendous results (and makes things super simple and fast for your brain to process, therefore removing "mental blocks"). Thank you for the great content Scott!
