 Hi Everyone,

No Music Theory Monday today - I just got back from my trip to Ann Arbor, MI and I'm back to my office in Seattle. I haven't filmed a MTM lesson yet because I've been frantically assembling a new livestreaming rig to use on Wednesday, when I will continue with the theme of making rhythm guitar more interesting.

This lesson is kind of an overview of where I'm headed with these CAGED Soloing lessons. Some of you might take this lesson and the PDFs and be able to start practicing solos over all of my youtube jamtracks, others of you may not be far enough along at this point. And thats OK! This stuff takes practice.

Another reason I made this video is because a few people have expressed a sense of being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of chord progressions there are out there. The thing is, if you work hard on one of these CAGED Soloing lesson series (the I - ii Series, for example) the next one you work on will be considerably less work, and the one after will be considerably less work.

Essentially, I wanted this to be kind of a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel-sneak-peak for people to get a sense of how expansive the CAGED concept can be. Sometimes its nice to just have a overall sense of how something works.

I should add, this video is entirely about the G shaped Pentatonic scale - not even any of the other CAGED shapes.

I hope those of who you are ready to tackle this can enjoy trying out solos over new progressions and those of you who aren't ready can enjoy a sense of perspective and a clearer idea of where I'm headed with the CAGED Soloing Series.

Scott, these are exactly the kinds of tools I think we need to be able to get a real handle on playing to chord tones while soling in CAGED. As a resources pool this is excellent. I for one would like to see this expanded further than you've gone here!

I feel like I can take this all to the piano in the form of just realizing that if I think of the target notes pertaining to the chord happening, even up to 9s. Just different less movable format on piano. So excited to play around. I took a day and just mapped out all the diatonic extensions up to 13s (wow, it's a crazy chart btw haha.) So I have the b9 in my diatonically extended chart for the iiim7b9 & the vii ø b9 (viim7b5b9) degree but without this video would not have realized how much they are not nice tones to use(!). Great video. I had to rewind a few times and really think it out. :)

I'm glad you got something out of this one! It was pretty intense for a lot of people. But it was an overview of the places we can and will go eventually with lessons

Olivia

This is so helpful thanks! One question though, how would you look at this in terms of modes?

Tim Rowley

Excellent video. I feel like there is years to be spent on the G-shape alone after watching this!

I made so far and I got it what is going on! Own my God, did I learned a bit how music works? Finally? I am RIDICULOS happy! I also learned that I was right from the beginning! Dom 7 chords are important but, they are still weird! Maj7 and Min9 are the Kings! Thanks for the PDFs SPJ! I think is time for me to grow up and hit to the solo lessons! Lets do this! 🖕🏻ops sorry, wrong finger….👍🏻 🤜🏻🤛🏻

Hi Scott - am a bit confused and maybe you can help. From your PDF that is the G Shape (R-3rd-5th) the way you have it setup on the fret board I thought that this is A major scale pentatonic or F# minor and yet you call this the G Major shape pentatonic chords - what am I missing here? (Guessing it could be the shape and that what you have on the PDF is actually A major scale pentatonic OR F# minor pentatonic. Please advise!

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Dario - the shape is movable so it isn't reserved for the 2nd fret only. As written, it IS in the key of A Major or F# Minor, but the CAGED system is all about naming movable shapes after open chord SHAPES. So it's called the G shaped pentatonic scale and all the chords in the key are related to the key of G as well. I'm working on a CAGED Basics series right now so if this feels intense, hang out for the for CAGED Basics Series.

Oh this was super nice. That 7th and 9th were exactly what I felt was missing from my practice routine. God I love that sound. Maybe its all the jazz and blues that Ive been listening for years now. Any chance for a 1,4,5 progression soon? :)
