Listening to you discuss potential plays and getting more familiar with volleyball terms makes me so happy! I hope one day you get to watch a volleyball game in person! When you’re up in the air to hit, it really is a quick second so the decision making has to be fast. Usually when you’re taking your approach to hit, you already have an idea of where you’re going to place it. Now that Hinata’s learned other moves besides the quick, he’s able to think more and adapt to the situation accordingly just like he did after Johzenji stepped back to receive his quick the first time. It takes great peripheral vision to be able to see where everyone is while you’re in the air and Hinata continues to develop that skill the more that he learns and plays.

Interesting point about fan service that I thought I would bring up since I’ve been researching it recently for a uni project! Relative to other anime (especially sports anime) that I’ve watched, Haikyuu actually has not very much fan service. But it is definitely there. It comes down to the intended audience (boys, since haikyuu is a ‘shonen’ anime) and how to gain their interest. But audiences have changed a lot recently so many girls also watch shonen anime, and as a whole don’t like fan service. There’s also fan service aimed at girls though in other anime. Things are changing, there definitely used to be a lot more, and it was much worse. Being in Japan now it’s shocking and uncomfortable to me how prevalent it is. That being said, in Haikyuu I think it usually comes off less as actual fan service and more like joking about how the characters (who are typical teenagers) think. Even as a girl I find the scene you pointed out amusing cos we’ve all been Yachi at some point lol. Interestingly I checked the manga to compare Kiyoko’s initial introduction and it was totally different. No weird fan service shots at all. I guess the animators added it. But anyway, glad you mentioned it! I agree that it’s unnecessary and I’ve found quite a few academic papers discussing it P.S RIP Daichi
