Whew, finally caught up, and just in time to join you guys for the final few episodes! I'm glad I'm here, it'll make watching the finale that much more fun. This is such a great episode. It's relatively low action, but the tension around the fireplace grips you the entire time as the characters, and we the audience, reflect on everything it took to get us here, and all the blood on everybody's hands. Reiner so matter-of-factly recounting how Marco died is chilling. He doesn't let Annie take any of the blame for it, and he goes through every detail, like it's been replaying in his mind since the moment it happened. Great to see the Scouts all together again, camping in the woods like old times. Side note, I love the fake out death we got with Levi. Of course we were all skeptical, cause ain't no way in hell that Captain Levi Ackerman, Certified Badass, was going to be taken out by a random explosion and die offscreen. But it really feels like they have to keep finding reasons to take Levi out of the fight, with him hurting his leg in Season 1 and now taking a Thunder Spear to the face, because they know that otherwise he'd absolutely BODY any foe they faced.

Every time I watch this episode I was always confused at the camera directing, but I just found out why it was edited the way that it was and it's genius. Even you guys said you noticed that the tone and vibe was different. The many focused shots and jump cuts to the forest environment in this episode was more important than I thought because what the group is experiencing is directly related to what Mr. Braus always said about the forest. We are seeing the group argue amongst each other and continue the cycle of hate because they literally and figuratively haven't escaped the forest yet. But by the end, we see some semblance of putting aside differences/regret as Magath empathizes with Gabi and Jean apologizing to her as they leave the forest. This is also supported by how you guys noticed that the kids are more adults than the adults themselves, contrasted by how Mr. Braus said that it was up to the adults to keep the kids out of the forest. I can't help but think the info card about Hange's stew having a generous amount of potatoes was another clue to help us catch onto this.
