The baron couldn't believe his luck in being seated beside the latter, free to ply her with his honeyed words away from her husband's ears; after all, he knew he was truly irresistible.

In his self-absorption, he was oblivious to the queen's game of ever-changing eyes, to the glances between the monarchs, and to the fact they had finally settled on "sugar-bloated sewer-rat" as his most apt title.
