When a crew brings up a wreck, it is the captain who has first choice of the salvage. And Ironbrace always chose moldering bottles and shards of aging timber; "to give the old hulks new life," he said, as the walls of his cabin grew lined with perished ships in miniature, each in its own glass sepulchre.

And, when one of his crew felt a call to leave the sea, each went with a ship from the precious collection. For the sea might call them back again, and his charges would not be found wanting.
