Scroll, very rare

This long scroll is covered in writing. It takes 1 minute to read it aloud in its entirety. At the end of the minute, you're affected by the true polymorph spell. This version of the spell can only transform you into a humanoid, and if you concentrate on the spell for the full duration, it can't be dispelled against your will. Your game statistics and worn equipment remain the same, although your racial traits are replaced by the ones of your new form.

This scroll is only destroyed if the spell is concentrated on for the full duration and becomes permanent. The spell ends early if another creature reads from the scroll before then and gains its effects.

"So, what should we call you now?"

They gave a thoughtful pause before responding. "...Risa," they said. "You can call me Risa."

"Well in that case, it's lovely to meet you, Risa."

The two smiled at each other, as friends that had endured more than mere time and memories, but now through meaningful transformations.

"It's great to meet you too, Raikya."

I'm struggling to understand the usefulness of this item. What's the utility of this? It does nothing to help someone who's trapped in a form that can't read or speak.

Fantastic item. Helps people tell narratives of personal importance.

It's a (dare I say, queer) storytelling item. Less mechanical and more narrative.

I guess it's for those who want to change there race either for roleplay purposes like a character who doesn't feel right in there skin or those who don't want start the campaign over.

What happens if a non-humanoid reads the scroll? Because as currently written, that's not excluded. It's just made wonky by the restrictions on the final form.

i would imagine it still works as written - a creature with high enough intelligence to read it would probably be able to tell what the point is, and if they don't wanna be a humanoid they can just end concentration

From a social perspective, it provides roleplaying opportunities to people who are looking for some forms of representation, transgender being the first that comes to mind. From a magical campaign world perspective, it provides a great "out" for someone stuck with an unwanted Reincarnation change, which could inspire a quest to find this specific item.

But what counts a racial trait for, say, a dragon vs. part of their individual game statistics that stay the same? Is it everything and they become a commoner with the racial traits of a specific race? Everything physical changes but mental stats stay the same (what counts as physical beyond physical ability scores)? Does truly nothing change and they're just a dude with all the capabilities of a dragon, because they didn't have racial traits before? At a minimum, creature type should be excluded from the game stats that stay the same, as "all game statistics" normally includes creature type.

Hey! That word is being used correctly!
