Hey adventurers!

First of all, let me give a big thank you to everyone that participated in the questionnaires last week. Your feedback was super useful, and went into the planning of some upgrades to your tiers. Information on what upgrades you're getting to your tiers is just below this next segment.

Now, about the other—

The Griffon's Saddlebag: Book Two is coming to DnDBeyond next month!

Prepare to see everything you know from the book on DnDBeyond starting sometime in September! Use your favorite magic items on your character, integrated and usable just like any other official one! This has been an exciting opportunity to work with Wizards after a tumultuous 2023, and it's been refreshing to see them hard at work making good on their intentions and listening to my (and your) feedback. You can expect to hear more from me about this release closer to when it happens next month.

Your Support Tiers are Getting an Upgrade!

By far, the most common reason why a patron drops their pledge is because their financial situation's changed. It's a scary world to live in where you have to choose whether to pay for rent, for groceries, or for your hobbies. From the start, the Saddlebag has been intent on being accessible, and as the world gets more expensive, I want to make sure that you can still feel fiscally safe investing in yourself and your joys.

So, I'm glad to announce that in the coming month, I'm looking to introduce some changes to give you more flexibility with your support options. Below are the changes I'm proposing, and while these are not final, I don't anticipate needing to change them based on your feedback. If you feel strongly about something, please feel free to let me know in the comments below or in a direct message (here or on Discord: either is fine).

In general:

  • People like annual options, either for the sake of simplifying their monthly financial planning or because they liked the associated discounts. It's easy for subscriptions to get out of control, so annual ones are an easier way to make thoughtful decisions.

  • Free members think that a $3 start tier is a good cost, although a good number also thought a $2 one would be fair.

  • $5 members were unsure if adding L+ or PDFs to their tier would be worth a $1 price increase, but definitely wanted them one way or another.

    • Side note: I'm so glad so many of you like the subclasses and settings so much, that's always great to see. It's so much fun making those.

  • $9 members really liked the idea of letting their four of their friends get access to L+.

    • Side note: for members that asked questions about filters in L+, hit Tab while searching to change your parameter to Description, rather than name/meta. :)

Here's what I'm planning to do with this information

Reopen the $3 tier. The $3 tier gives you access to new art and card posts, as well as a the base Ledger here on Patreon. It doesn't give you access to the subclasses or settings, nor does it the monthly PDFs or tables, but it's a great and low-cost option for many that are fully focused on just the item content. The monthly card packs would stay put with higher tiers. Because this is a cost effective option for people that just want to support and have access to the art when they need it, I'll also offer this at a reduced annual rate of $30 a year: This splits the difference between an annual membership cost of a $2 and $3 tier.

Reopen the $7 tier at a reduced cost: $6 a month, or $60 a year. This change brings the annual cost to the same as many third party 5e books. This tier gives you the same as the current $5 tier, plus Ledger+ access and the Inventory and Looter's Table monthly files. A great boost in value for a cost that's still attainable.

Give the $9 tier more perks and a similar annual rate of $80 a year. Your support would give you and four other email addresses access to L+. You'd be able to change the list of emails at any time. You would also get the same discount currently reserved for $13 patrons when purchasing the backlog of Foundry content. However, this discount will be increased to 40% off Foundry content from the store. This also makes it so buying year-long megapacks from the store about the same as buying a third party book, and a normally-priced month's module closer to $5 apiece.

Reduce the cost of the $13 tier to $12. You'll also get the L+ upgrade, just for a dollar less (since the Foundry discount is moving to the $9 tier).

For the sake of simplicity, unpublish the $5 tier. The tier would be hidden (but not deleted). This means if you like what you have now, you can stay put. No problems whatsoever. Thank you for it!

What does this look like?

This means that the revised tier list list would be $3 ($30/year), $6 ($60/yr), $9 ($80/year), and $12. There are also new creator tools that could offer you discounts on new membership costs. Again, my goal is to bring the nearly 7,000 free members here, many of whom are ex-patrons because of financial situations, into a place where you feel like you can afford to support the Saddlebag and enjoy the rewards you receive.

To make these changes, Patreon requires that I change the billing method to a typical subscription one instead of the 1st of the month charge that Patreon is well known for. For most of you, that won't impact your bill dates: you'll be billed on the first of each month, because that's when your current cycle starts. For new patrons, though, this means that you won't get billed twice if you join on the 30th and then again on the 1st of the next month.

I'm anticipating these changes going live in about a month. In the meantime, I'm making sure that the Ledger+ can handle the new functionality. More on some associated L+ upgrades soon.

That's all from me today! Again, this time, the comments are open: please feel free to include any thoughts you have, good or bad. I read everything! If someone disagrees with you, please don't feel the need to protect my honor or start an argument. I rely on people disagreeing with me on matters I don't necessarily have a perspective on. Otherwise, shoot me a message here on Patreon or Discord or email.

That's from me for now! Talk more soon, and keep on adventuring!

Sound Wave

Will Book one also be on DnDBeyond some day as well? If so, yay!

Get Your Crit On

That's awesome, man!! Will the legacy $7 tier be reduced to $6 as well? And are there any possible discussions of Book 1 being added to Dndbeyond as well?

Sam A.

CONGRATS ON THE BOOK THING! I hope D&D Beyond is being fair to you with their pricing & cut-taking.

Jeremy Blosser

Wow. You're a real one and this just validates you are worth giving my money to. This is all great, but having even some of the content native on DDB is huge and I hope we see lots more of it.

Josh Kersey

Congratulations and I am so happy for you that you got with Wizards of the Coast for D&D beyond. And I'm excited to be able to give my DM The Ledger+ without always having to have him look through my account lol

the_griffons_saddlebag

YES! It's the *same tier*, just republished and with a cost decrease. If you're already at that tier, you stay put and pay less!

danthebard

I've been a high tier member for almost 6 years, and I must share how greatly disappointed I am to see you working with and supporting Wizards of the Coast and DnDBeyond. Highly considering cancelling my membership after all these years.

Dyanosis

To be fair for most creators - they are ALL, in one way or another, "working with" and/or "supporting" WotC and/or DNDB. How could they not? Some/all of their content literally doesn't exist without those systems. D&D is WotC, Pathfinder is Paizo. Sure, the items from this particular patreon creator could work with other systems, but most of them are worded specifically for D&D play. But in the same vein, WotC, DNDB, Paizo, etc are all the reason why creators, like the Griffon Saddlebags, can even suggest price reductions when everyone else is raising their prices. It's called subsidizing - someone else pays a price (or in this case, higher price) so that the rest of us may enjoy a lower/free cost. It happens in all parts of life and it's the only reason that things don't get wildly out of hand in other industries. Have you seen other Patreon creators? They're raising their prices, some of them by almost double. Too bad those same creators don't "work with and support" companies that aren't always the most respectable companies. Fun fact - I eat at Chick Fil A, but it doesn't mean that I am in support or that I agree with any of their philosophies. Food for thought (no pun intended).

Dyanosis

My question is this - why is the $9 tier going to be $80/year (aka saving just over 3 months) instead of following the trend of the $3 and $6 (aka saving 2 months). While it does make it more enticing to just pay for the $9 tier annually, it bothers my OCD slightly that it's a nice easy "every tier, annually, saves me 2 months". It also seems like the $12 tier doesn't have any sort of savings... is that intentional? I'd also like to say thank you for this considerate post. Seems our feedback was valuable and it resulted in more value for our money (and, in some ways, a lower cost across the board). That's awesome!

Nicholas Lemr

I am excited, I'm on the current $5 tier but for the extra Ledger+ access, I think I'll have to change to the $6 tier once everything shakes out! And congrats on the D&DBeyond deal! I use the site for my playrs to make their characters, so it'll be nice to access the items from D&DBeyond. Hope to see more from you on their site as time goes on!

Sumaky 93

Quick question: If i buy the book here, do i get it for DnD Beyond extra or do i need to buy 2 books if i want the PDF?

danthebard

A lot of words to say you don't vote with your wallet. I do. Most of the other comments are supportive of this move and that's their right. All I did was make my voice heard.

Atieno

If it helps - I completely agree with you. It feels a bit crap that a lot of us went to bat back in the day for this Patreon and other creators against WotC, yet now someone who was going on about how unfair, oppressive and predatory WotC were being, is now positioned to work with them to benefit from them. Add that to this creator’s recent ambivalence towards the recent DDB debacle, where character sheets were being modified to 2024 spell usage without player consent and it just feels like the solidarity that was shown here by supporters, maybe isn’t as reciprocated as it could be. This isn’t a dig at griff directly… as maybe I’m wrong in my assumption and I understand it’s a business ran for profit, but it doesn’t change the fact that for some reason this didn’t take me to my happy place. It just made me feel like “i thought we were advocating for indie creatives to be free from corpo nonsense; not for said creatives to end up working in with them.” - but maybe those are more reflective of my issues and reservations when it comes to WotC and how it’s been treating customers over the past 2 years.

the_griffons_saddlebag

Hey! Great questions! I'm working on what the $12 option would have for an annual cost. I have a number in mind but wanna run it by some folks first. It'll have an annual option when these go live. As for the costs per annual rate: these are following typical *book* costs, more than pure math. While many folks may balk at subscriptions, they'll happily pay for a book a year, which this equates itself to. Commercially speaking, similar to what you said, if someone thinks that a $20 upgrade from one tier to the other is a steal, then I made a bonus $20. Works for me! Thanks for the questions and for participating in the questionnaires!

the_griffons_saddlebag

Hey danthebard! Please rest assured that I wouldn't work with WotC if they weren't upholding their end of their promises. They've been good about listening to me and making changes to how they run things, and have been receptive to when I tell them that something they're doing is predatory or bad for players sticking with 2014 rules. I was emailing them over the weekend prior to them backtracking on their latest 2024 update for DDB. I understand your emotional ties to what happened last year: I do too, it's why I mentioned it in the post. I hope that you can put enough faith on me to trust me to keep them on the straight and narrow. I already have a couple times. Again, I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't a fair deal and if they weren't treating me or my fellow creators well!

the_griffons_saddlebag

Hey Atieno! I just responded to the top comment about this too, but I'll reemphasize here: I agree with you, which is why I hope you can trust me to keep the company in line. You bring up the 2024 character sheets: they just backtracked on that after lots of player feedback and a lengthy email chain I had with them going into the weekend. I've also sent them UX flows of toggles and the like. Again, I hope you can trust me to be looking out for you. I wouldn't take this deal if it wasn't fair and if they didn't respect what I had to say.

the_griffons_saddlebag

Heya! Do you mean buy the book on hit point Press? In either case, you can get the PDF through HPP, but to use the implemented items on DDB that would be a different purchase: different companies, different versions of the same product. If that didn't answer your question, lemme know!

Sumaky 93

Yeah, that's the Answer i didnt hoped for, but i get it. Thank you very much

Dyanosis

As soon as you said "book costs", it made sense. Books are normally 30/60/80 (or somewhere in that range). Good way to do it. If I wagered a guess, I'd say your $12 is going to be either $110 (so saving about 3 months) or $100. Seeing as most book bundles would be $100, I bet that's what you'll do. Still be a good steal for anyone wanting to "go for the gold". And yeah, you're thinking like a business - "if people think it's a steal, that's just more money in my pocket". I mean, either way, we're getting some pretty cool things from your patreon (even for those of us who are just popping items and aren't as interested in the adventures or subclasses).

Dyanosis

Same thought here. I asked him privately this same thing and this now answers my question too. Buying "the same product" from 2 different companies. I hate that model.

Atieno

Hey griff, yeh that makes sense. Like I am super happy for you to get a new level of success, that’s awesome… just got a lot of reservations about WotC, as even their recent actions aren’t great. (Their communication is still utterly shocking and they don’t seem to understand even basic transparency would go a far way - rather than continually springing stuff on everyone at the last minute, with nay notice.) Anyway I do hope things go well and I’ve got my fingers crossed for you. I suppose when I referenced the recent debacle about the 2014 spells on ddb I was referencing your initial response about feeble mind and branding smite - which I maybe mistakenly read as ambivalence to what was happening at the time - thanks for the extra context.

the_griffons_saddlebag

It's hard to convince companies to use a digital voucher. I agree with you that it's unfortunate, of course. I'd love it if you could, too! I'm doing my best to make sure that there's a first-week discount, and pricing the book on DDB fairly so it doesn't feel so bad when purchasing it.

the_griffons_saddlebag

Ah, I know the comment you're talking about. My message there was moreso with regards to how it would impact playtests, rather than as it pertained to UX or user rights. To some degree I get why they went the route they did (monsters across generations casting the same spell for the sake of clarity), but still: just add toggles. I've sent them designs and more than a few emails just telling them to get toggles in there. I think they're listening now.

Sumaky 93

Thank you for that, really I just wanted some clear answer, so thank you for the Quick Answer I'll hope to see more of those awesome Things you and your Team does for DnD 5e

Odd

As a Foundry+Beyond20 user, this has been long-awaited! I've liked the 3rd party content they've done in partnership recently, but a book dedicated to (very high quality) magic items is a gamechanger! If LootTavern gets roped in to this too that would make me a happy DM. Shame I'll have to double-pay, but what are ya gonna do!

Odd

Oh hellll yeah. Yeah I know it's probably an uphill battle but any pressure you could put on them to offer a Patrons discount would be MUCH appreciated (and also probably a smart business move on their side - maybe show them this comment section).

the_griffons_saddlebag

Between Patreon's duct-taped API and DDB's kinda archaic infrastructure, it's *certainly* an uphill battle for the time being. I've brought it up, though! They're aware of the idea and benefits, for sure.

Odd

Yeahhh. Heard. Firing a bunch of their staff recently probably made this way easier to implement too.

JanxSpirit

At some point, we as a community are going to have to acknowledge that we won those fights.

Nik

Congrats! I am super excited to have the book on dnd beyond! Is there a specific release date yet?
