Oh wow! I’d completely forgotten I’d recommended this, so was delighted and surprised to get a shout out. I’ve found an image of the copy I had. It was definitely in the children’s section of the bookshop. The 70s was a great time for children to access horror in the UK. Loads of our tv was deeply weird: Tomorrow People, Children of the Stones, The Ghosts of Motley Hall. Nobody mentions the film Candyman? “Sweets to the sweet” is the monsters catchphrase and it is spray painted across his lair
