Hearing Chad say "Shoggoth SCORED" triggered the sound of a long, awesome electric guitar twang and an "OH YEEEEEAH!" in the back of my head. Also, Chad, I saw that video of a "rat-snake" on Facebook a while ago. That was ACTUALLY a family of shrews, the children forming a line behind mom like that so they wouldn't get separated during travel and potentially get lost. ... ...I'm starting to get the feeling that it is my inexorable destiny to comment about small, quadrupedal mammals under these podcast episodes. I am content with this glorious purpose.

Who started the story about Algernon Blackwood’s knighthood? Lying Vincent Price, I’m looking at you! Vinne is not behind the Batman/Riddler orgy story though - that came straight from Adam West in a 2014 interview: Q: What’s your favorite memory of Frank Gorshin? He defined that role so well. A: Well, I think one of my favorite memories is that Frank and I were invited to a party one night and we decided to go, a Hollywood party we didn’t know anything about. We were kind of laughing and having a few beers and said, "Let’s go over there." We walked in ... and it was an orgy. So I immediately went into the Batman character, and Frank went into the Riddler character, because we were getting the big giggles. It was so funny to us, what we walked into. And we were kicked out. We were expelled from the orgy. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/exclusive-batmans-adam-west-his-favorite-episode-villain-bat-gadget-and-more

I do want to ask if they know the manga creator Junji Ito,because he’s known to be greatly influenced by Lovecraft.

Jeff C Carter is totally legit with his list of Christmas weirdness. Al Ridenour has a great podcast called Bone And Sickle and recently covered winter ghosts and Christmas figures from folklore over the course of several episodes. It's well worth the listen. Sadly, though, Tió de Nadal was not on Al's list.

In regards to that Alan West story, I don’t have conclusive evidence, but I HAVE heard that story at least twice before. Edit: Having just read Rafe’s comment, that makes THREE times!

Thank so much for recommendating Bone and Sickle. I’m listening to it now and it’s awesome!

I always understood that to be one of the common urban myths like West and Ward getting it on onset in costume or Jim Nabors playing Gomer for Rock Hudson. Pretty sure I read more than a couple of versions and more of these in the enquirer, but who knows, just dont think the Riddlers spandex would do well in an orgy, but might explain the brightness of the question marks.

Since you mentioned Kuttner's "Mimsy Were the Borogoves", it's worth further mentioning that they adapted that short story into a movie in 2007 as "The Last Mimzy". It was a decent scifi film, but it dumped all the weirdness of the original story in favor of a full explanation of precisely what task the objects are intended to accomplish, why they need to complete that task, and an epilogue confirming that the plan worked.

My 2nd favorite thing about having an extensive Chad Fifer album collection is knowing interstitial music tracks by name. #wolvesofwinter

If anyone is interested in a very good and quite unsettling/disturbing fiction podcast in the vein of Nightwire, I Am In Eskew is fantastic. It's also got a bit of a House on the Borderlands feel to it.

I went back to the source about the cow and the cake, at the other end of the sofa.

The Englishman reminded me of the Blue Raja who throws cutlery with unerring accuracy, from the best superhero movie.

The Warrior Squirrel of Leicester is a shibboleth for British English. We say skwi-rel, nor skwirl and wa-ree-er not wah-yer. Leicester is left as an exercise for the reader.

Oh no! Chris has broken British law by assuming a title he doesn't own, unless I missed it in the New Year's Honours list. [...] Oh, it's fine. Her Madge is totally a listener to the show.

This is such a good story, I actually don't care if it really happened. It's true in a more essential way than mere fact.

Just wanted to thank you guys for reading my comments about Christmas and Mithraism on the show. It was really cool to hear. Now if only I could get you to read some more Robert E. Howard stories. ;)

Is that the name of the track they played at the end of the episode? That's my favorite of their interstitial music tracks. I need Mr. Fifer's album collection. Are they still on bandcamp?

I actually studied English at Leicester and had a linguistics prof who took great delight in the unique elements of the local accent that apparently derive ultimately from the city being right at the edge of the Danelaw. Other Danish features include the heavy concentration of settlements with names ending with -by (such as Oadby) which are apparently common around and North of Leicester but drop off in concentration further south. IIRC you guys also call baps cobs and cobs baps.

Random but that explanation of what english means explained what Elle Bishop meant in the cage with Sylar when she's showing him how to user her lightning powers and tells him to "put a little english on it" and gestures a hand twist. Yep, that's an OHHHHHHHHHH that goes all the way back to heroes season three.

I love Robert E Howard but my general rule is if a character is named "Steve" in a REH story, it's probably not very good.
