In a lot of horror stories the narrator seems willfully ignorant of the obvious supernatural element until near the end of the story. In this story, the narrator is painfully aware of a supernatural element throughout the whole story. It is a switch up to the formula and it is jarring. I think it works in that it helps establish the idea that the narrator is like a puppet on strings going through the motions and helpless to save himself despite being aware of the danger. Yes, he knows these people are cat-like but he can't do anything with that information because of the other supernatural element in the story that is even more terrible.
