Took me two listenings, but I think that snake thing is a uraeus. The uraeus was a snake motif that was attached to the very front of the pharaoh's crowns. So I think the mummy in this story wasn't just wearing a symbolic snake headdress to show he was royalty, but had a real living snake on his head that would mark him as a divine god-king Pharoah.
