While I've been helping my best friend with a Lovecraftian worldbuilding project, something interesting became apparent. There's a degree of similarity between the names "Yag" and "Yuggoth," and as Ken mentioned in "Out of the Aeons" the mi-go are latecommers to Yuggoth. More importantly, Ghatanothoa is described as probiscidian--elephants are the probiscidia. In addition, Rhan-Tegoth--another ancient denizen of Yuggoth--is notable for having a proboscis. I highly doubt these similarities were intended, but they're great fodder for worldbuilding. In our case we conflated the ancient denizens of Yuggoth who fled to Earth with Colin Wilson's Lloigor, with the assumption that their resemblance to wyvern (or elephant men) was a fanciful comparison to more familiar things by the humans relating the tales. The bauplan we settled on was more akin to the ancient opabinia, in fact.

One thing that really comes through in this story is Howard's hatred of slavery which really underpins the section with the elephant being which always brings a strong emotional reaction in me every time I read this story.
