The Greeks have an interesting myth about animal sacrifice. Prometheus (before stealing fire and getting punished) was teaching humans how to honor the gods. He told them they had to sacrifice animals to show their devotion and respect. He prepared an animal body by removing all the meat and putting it in a bag and setting it aside and leaving all the fat and bones enveloped in the animal's skin. He then brought both to Zeus and the other gods and started burning both and he asked which part of the animal they wanted sacrificed to them. Zeus could smell the fat cooking and picked the skin because it smelled delicious. Prometheus asked if he was sure, Zeus said yes. So then Prometheus made the announcement that all animal sacrifices should be prepared this way, that the animal fats, skin, and bones should be burnt to appease the gods and the humans can keep the rest. Zeus was upset that he was tricked and he would have nothing to eat, but he could not go back on his word. So Prometheus brought the meat back to the humans so they could eat. This is probably caused Zeus to punish Prometheus so severely later, but at least humans get to eat the meat of animal sacrifices and only have to burn up the animal fats and bones.

I do love this myth. Prometheus sure knew how to piss off Zeus, too.
