No, it’s not a werewolf, but it sounds like it could be! Tune in as we talk Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad by M.R. James.

This week, we’re joined once again by guest host Matt Burriesci, author of the new novel Nonprofit. Please pick it up and enjoy! And if you like what we do here, then you shouldn’t miss his next book, Dead White Guys, available for pre-order now!

Special thanks to our inestimable reader, Jon Hancock, master of the dining hall conversational butt-in.

Jean Redpath‘s voice is haunting and wonderful.

Fifer stole all of his Latin translations from Ghosts & Scholars.

Next week: We’re kicking it into Lycanthropic high gear with the Gerald Biss novel The Door of the Unreal. Werewolves ahoy!!

Late as I am, I'd like to point out that the spectre here doesn't seem to be a sheeted figure. With the ways its appearance and motion is described, it seems more like whatever immaterial Thing was after the protagonist just possessed a nearby object--controlling the sheet and twisting it into a vaguely man-like form to attack him. Funnily enough, one of the old issues of Dragon Magazine provided AD&D 2E monster stats for various creatures that appear in James' tales, among them being this creature. The article christens the beast a "death linnen" and it can be seen here: http://www.lomion.de/cmm/dealinsh.php
