I know I'm a bit late to the Halpin Frayser party, but this story confused the hell out of me... My interpretation: there was definitely incest going on between Halpin and his mother, and she went to California under an assumed name so they could be together in a place where they were unknown. In Halpin's dream, the whole business about being Shanghai'd and stuck on an island was an invented memory to replace actual memories of incest.
