it's not strange if the pictures are very similar to a manga art form; also this is similar to MS in a Bottle, a metaphor for the soul's journey or a journey to the center of the Earth. I think the flaw with this is the setting should've been in Australia because under the Sahara is water, the rock doesn't go that far below, also oxygen levels get depleted the further down.
