Did you use a fixative on the drawing before painting ? And do you switch brushes each time you clean your palette for a new colour ?

I use a little bit of Spectra Fix to fix the drawing- and usually I use the same brushes throughout- just cleaned with a bit of linseed oil.

Hi Stephen, it's so much fun painting with oils! Thanks for addressing the health risks with solvents. Can you recommend what kind of ventilation we need for just working with the paints? I'm painting in a spare bedroom that has just one small window and don't want to cause health problems for myself or my family. Thanks!

The oil paints themselves, as far as I am aware, do not have any significant off gassing. Really it is just linseed oil oxidizing. I would reccommend you to be careful about secondary contamination like paint on your clothing getting in to the washing machine for instance- or from your hands to the doorknobs in the house.

i thought Sargent was an Alla Prima man, exclusively ? Sanders has a study of Lady Agnew you might be interested in: bit.ly/3i89zeu
