Initial sketch to finished illustration. Working with a background color even in the preliminary sketch phase can really help get the tone you want for your illustration. I love softer, warm colors to start but it depends where you want to go. Deep blues or even grays are great for moodier scenes while a nice ochre is great for the beginnings of an outdoorsy scene.

Also play with filters to add texture. A soft “noise” filter for the background is great for getting a traditional paper grain look. It can help pop your focal point of your art, as well!
