I think the implication is that funeral for Gunn's friend, where they set the body on fire, was to insure that he didn't come back as a vampire even though they couldn't be sure if he drank or not. They essentially dealt with it ahead of time without waiting to see if he arose or not. All that aside you're absolutely correct to draw the parallels between this and Gunn's sister. I can't imagine that he'll be dealing with it very well at all😬
