So as I said in my comment on "Fool for Love", this episode is one of the things that pushes "Fool for Love" into Top 5 territory for me. Both episodes are great in their own right, but the way they expand on each other in this incredibly creative stealth-crossover event elevates them both. And the amazing thing is that even though the stories being told through Spike's side of these events and Darla/Angel's are very different, they share some common themes. Both are partially "about" whether and to what extent soulless vampires are capable of love, and both take characters that up to now have mostly just been portrayed as villains and make them sympathetic. Darla has a soul now, but until this episode she wasn't really acting like it. Was she just a terrible person as a human, so that the presence of a soul would make no difference? Well, no--but she was "Darla" for so long, she barely remembers being human, and what she does remember she has no desire to return to. As much as I enjoy the flashbacks, my favorite scene in the episode is the final one, in which Angel and Darla both think they've reached an understanding, until the moment Darla asks him to turn her back and reveals how far from the truth that is. To Darla, turning Angel into a vampire was a favor; to Angel, it was damnation. To Angel, becoming human again would mean salvation; to Darla, it means nothing but "pain, suffering, disease, and death". Time will tell whether either of them will come around to the other's way of thinking.
