Hello all you fine folks!

Last month I started work on a Underdark asset pack, running into a couple of issues with how I could get the most out of my terrains in combination with height paths (the wall edges of a cavern or Underdark passage). I had already finished up a couple of objects assets with Marvin, but well the centerpiece of this pack would mainly be those paths and textures.

That's when I decided to roll it back a little and figure out how to get the most out of transitions between textures (mostly lessons learned from doing the sea assets) and take them the next step further.

Instead of using paths for the edges of terrains, I would use these handpainted terrain pieces that show the transition between two terrains (like between dirt and grass, or dirt and stone, or stone and grass). Using simple height paths that can be repeated with the best-looking results.

Making it possible to create mountains or caves for the step into the Underdark there. Using this technique would make converting maps from one setting to another a lot easier for future content. You can just flip out the autumn for the grass, or the grass for the snow textures, and boom you've got a winter version of your map. No need to change out paths in the terrain or anything like that.

To test this out I decided to work on some requested assets (trees with disassembled shadows so you can place them separately), more dead trees, and get into some of the vanilla assets I plan on transitioning in the full 1-1 conversion pack I'm working on slowly but surely.

Using this technique will make it super easy to convert some of the city buildings I've been doing into new terrains as well. For future plans, it will also make it a lot more interesting to add dessert, swamp, etc. terrain types that can be easily swapped out.

And it should also make it a lot easier again to now create custom terrain maps on the fly using only brushes!
