Whenever I see you reacting to something by Xdinary I kick my feet like a little girl in excitement. I love that you love them too. Lol

I'm so glad someone is pointing out how gorgeous Gaon's tone is. IIRC he's the one that you liked in their recording vids bc he's adorably goofy. And I'm hollering at you not even recognizing him in their first immortal songs performance 🤣

Sooo I don’t know if you’re familiar w/ Immortal Songs, but in case anyone who sees this isn’t I thought I’d give the low-down since I upgraded by viki subscription just to watch XH’s episodes lol. Immortal Songs is a competition show, albeit a pretty casual one. It's been going since like 2007, and is very vocals focused. Only really talented, well-known singers are brought on the show, they don't allow any lip-syncing and only very minimal backing tracks (which most performers opt out of using anyways). Idol groups aren’t even invited on very often, or if they are it’ll just be the lead vocalist doing a solo, and they win even less often. Ateez are an exception, having performed 6 times and won 4. XH being invited on only a year after their debut is actually very impressive. The usual episode premise is that it centers on an "immortal" singer, i.e. a legendary Korean artist with a much beloved discography. Current Korean artists (from all different genres and areas of the korean music industry, from rappers to trot singers to broadway stars) will pick one of the legend's songs and perform a cover. Names are drawn randomly, the live studio audience votes after the first 2 performances, the winner gets to sit in a fancy red chair on the sidelines, then the next performer gets picked and the audience votes again, if the 3rd performer gets more votes then they boot the previous round's winner off the couch, and it goes on like that until the winner is crowned in the final round. Sometimes they switch it up and will go with a theme for the ep instead, like kings of high notes or legends of hip hop, in which the contestants can pick any song that fits the theme. The legacy artist featured for XH’s first appearance is Patti Kim, a super important figure in Korean Music who seems like she was basically the Celine Dion of Korea in the 60s and 70s. Real fascinating lady, racked up a bunch of firsts like being the first Korean artist to be invited to perform in Japan after independence, continued to work with her first husband even after they got a very public but amicable divorce. She retired to the US 10 years ago so it was kind of a big deal for her to return just for this show. The song XH covered is Seoul’s Maternal Love (or Mother’s Heart In Seoul, depending on the translation), one of her more popular ones bc it’s easy to sing along to and full of pride for the capital city. XH chose it bc none of them are actually from Seoul, but it’s the place they all met and now call home, which I think is very sweet. Sadly they didn’t win their round, they lost to the artist that was already on the couch before them, and despite how incredible their performance was they said later that they didn’t do as well as they’d hoped bc they were really nervous. The green room scenes with the other artists were really funny tho, everyone kept commenting on how pretty Jooyeon is and fawning over his satoori accent lol. Their legacy artist for their 2nd appearance was Song Chang-Sik, a folk rock singer-singwriter who is also super important to Korean music history. If we’re drawing western comparisons, I think he was sort of a Bob Dylan or Neil Young type figure. He was pretty funny and sounds like the kind of guy who could tell stories about his life for days and never run out of new ones. Plus he seemed to really like XH’s cover of his song Why Do You Call Me. It’s originally a very simple, sort of melancholy song he wrote while overhearing a couple fighting next door. It was actually banned in Korea for a while though no one knows exactly why. XH really took the simple melody and ran w/ it, turning it into a really fun performance and adding a bunch of stuff without losing too much of the original. Not sure if you noticed, but Ode couldn’t perform this one, very sadly his grandma died right before the taping so he went to be w/ his family for the funeral. It’s extra sad bc he couldn’t be there when they actually won their round this time, beating out a previous performer who’d been on the winners couch for a few rounds already. They performed 2nd to last tho and ended up losing to Lee Mujin who went after them. He’s fantastic, and I know I’m very much biased but I really do think XH should have won given their expert rearrangement and performance. The show does unfortunately favor soloists tho. Again Ateez is the exception but generally idol groups and bands rarely win.

These boy can singggg and good to see other than some 2nd or third gen actually singing, hands down the best vocalists group in their generation

Koko3op

Ooooooohhh very interesting! Thank you. Them favouring soloists is interesting and mujin is no joke!!

I got into them by watching your videos and I’ve loved their covers, their voices are amazing, their performances but i haven’t really gotten into their music. It just hasn’t really clicked for me but I agreed if their arrangement were something reminiscent of Love Me Right I’ll be all in. Still have to give their b sides a listen though so maybe there are some gems in there for me.

The Love Me Right cover is my favourite thing they've ever done - I so desperately want it on spotify, it would be my top song! hahaha The arrangement is EVERYTHING, hate to be cliche, but "make the song your own" was not lost! The half time chorus works soooo well, and when you have vocals like that, Exo covers become possible 😂

Lynn Pratt

Oh, and they almost always do the arrangements for their covers themselves, fyi. Considering how much they changed up the original for both their immortal songs performances it's mad impressive.

Lynn Pratt

Here's Mujin's performance from that ep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWXdttvbi8o I stand by my op that XH had a better performance, but again I am somewhat biased and Mujin is of course great. His song choice might be more your style, if I had to guess.

I would recommend Pirates, Freddy, Again? Again!, and Ghost for something different than their title tracks

“Impossible” is by Nothing But Thieves. They’re from Essex lol. Great band. I went to their concert last year and it’s probably the best concert I’ve ever been to. Amazing crowd and Conor (their main singer) has a ridiculously good voice. ^^
