Whew,

I fought for my life to get through this LOL. Fuck me. I definitely have some country songs I've enjoyed but a lot of this was sooo underwhelming and didn't hit any memorable sweet spots that I was expecting.

Of course her vocals and vocal production is still stellar and does the job but on first impressions I'll be happy to not listen to any of these songs again however I know that with time and in a different mood/location, the ones I like I might grow to love but I'm not gonna force it since country is not my go to genre anyway.

Hopefully she goes on Mujin service - IUFGSHDFIKSDU if only.

Anyway, enjoy!

omg ik i just got here so i'll come back and watch this when i have the time but i just wanna say i think it'd be so fun to see a couple of western album reactions from you (if its something you'd be interested obviously) here and there bc i just love your insight on music! lol idk what albums necessarily but you always have such interesting takes

Mint

I actually didn't realize this was a thing that was dropping. Thanks for the notice. So many songs... I'll have to do this another time

Koko3op

Thank you, I definitely wanna do some Paramore albums and more. I did Ariana’s latest so it just depends really

Hibz

Whew i feel you. This album is too damn long, a lot of fillers imo. I got so tired of the percussions remaining the same throughout some of these songs. Maybe country isn't for me. She sounded great but halfway through the album i had to skip through some parts, i cant sit through mellow country songs back to back even for beyonce. As of now, i think i like 3 songs? Definitely a step down from renaissance but maybe a few will grow on me, I hope. Is it premature of me to ask for Act 3 already or the renaissance live album? Lol im ready to move on 🏃‍♀️💨

makayla

came straight to this reaction right after I finished it. I can understand it not quite with connecting to you but for me I loved this album. that saying I’m the target demographic a black woman from the south who enjoys country 💀

makayla

for me this is closer to old country than the pop country that has been popular recently which I love cause that was the music I was raised on

Koko3op

I'M SO EAGER for act 3! If it's rock/blues of some sort that'll be great or just straight r&b who knows!

Ashley

I loved this album, I don't enjoy country that much but the songs connected with me even though some will be skipped.

Bye with mujin service. As a black girl with a country ass family I loved it.

Kpopiana

mujin service? boyyyyyy if you don't 😭😭😭💀💀

Aleksandra

Blackbird is a cover of the beatles! Paul Mccartney wrote it about the civil rights movement in the us

ilays

Bae Yon-Sae sunbaenim on Lee Mujin Service would change lives 😭

ilays

I’ll listen to the album and circle back to this because i wasn’t even aware it was dropping lol

Irene

I also have that same issue with spotify?? Some times music is quieter.. Does anyone know why that is/how to fix it? For some reason that always happens when I listen to Amy Winehouse too?

Irene

I think it also harkens back to a legacy of black-american artists covering Beatles' music, who where not so coincidentaly, also making music often insipired by black america; sometimes covering or copying themselves. (I'm thinking specifically of Tina Turner, bc of the rock n'roll/country space she worked within at the begining of her career, and Nina Simone.)

Lol. They wouldn’t be able to take it. They ain’t seen that much melanin since Usher graced the music stages.

C'mon American Rah'Keem! Oh I loved this album! Something about it felt very cinematic to me on the first listen. Later I found out that she was inspired by western films. My family is from Alabama and Louisiana and something about the specific type of country influences she went for on this album felt very familiar and comforting. I do feel like Miley was misused. I think she has such a dynamic voice and so does Beyonce, so I feel like something bigger like YA YA would have suited them. I like that she featured some Black women country artists on BLACKBIIRD. It gave the song a new meaning in a way. This album feels like another 4 situation where it is an album that's for her more than anyone else. But since her profile is so massive now, it's gonna have better commercial success.

I think she achieve what she wanted w the album. The production, arrangement and vocals are so good. It’s the most interesting country ever sound to me. Not every song hits but the ones that do is really cool and I def will listen again. I like weird mixtures of sound and genre. A lot of songs really only sound good bc it’s Beyoncé singing it lol I do appreciate how long it is tho. It paints a picture well. I’m so used to mini albums and at most 8-10 tracks album releases that a 27 tracks album feels so substantial. Like a full length movie after so many YouTube shorts lol. It’s not her best album to me taste wise but it’s also such an interesting and cool direction that does add something more to the country genre and create something different. I think when an artist around for this long, it’s admirable to not fall into a pattern and bring something new and high quality every time. Im imagining if in 40 years we look back at her history as an artist, this album will still stand a worthy addition to her range of work.

I agree with you a lot on this, first and foremost that my expectations definitely worked against it on first listen. I enjoyed Texas hold ‘em so I was sort of hoping for more songs like that, at least in terms of tempo. Also for me the “legendary” features worked against it cause I was so disappointed that none of them were actual collabs?! Wym you got Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Linda Martell and none of them are singing?😭 I enjoyed all the other features tho, blackbird would have been my favorite if it were longer, plus I wanted to hear more from the other girls. Overall for me it was just long and slow lol. I realized that I like most of the songs individually but as a whole it’s a lot lol. I agree there were like 4 sounds that were very similar. As much as I’ve been missing the days of 3:30-4min songs I felt like I spent a lot of the album waiting for songs to be over, I hope the TikTok era hasn’t permanently damaged my attention span😩

Koko3op

Love this comment! Tbh I didn't have an issue with my attention spam with Renaissance because it took me on such a journey that was sooo unexpected so don't worry I'm sure you're fine. Also yes I expected some ACTUAL collars too, such a shame!

Nina Sera

Yes renaissance was the opposite experience, I was three songs in before I realized what was happening!😂

Seth

I also think its important to note this album is close to 4-5 years old. It was supposed to come out before Renaissance and be act i. She postponed the album bc she felt Renaissance was more needed with where we were after covid and everything that happened between 2020 and Renaissance coming out. This album for me isnt as impactful as Renaissance nor does it do anything crazy. What it does do for me is tell a narrative of a darker more personal side of Beyonce and also is her way of telling the country music industry to suck it. Overall it has quite a few standouts for me (Blackbiird, Jolene, 2 Most Wanted, Spaghettii Desert Eagle, RiiverDance and Tyrant) that really stand alone but I did feel it hard to enjoy the album as an entire entity due to the pacing and general slow nature of the album. Having added those songs to my rotation playlist they really shine for me. It does make me excited to see what she is going to do next, bc while this album didnt meet the expectations I originally had, it did surprise me in its mellow and more stripped back vibe.
