EDIT:I will react to the song I missed separately don't worry!

I do try to make it clear at the end, though I didn't jump out of my seat for the faster songs and was not pleased with the choruses I am HAPPY with the direction their headed in.

They took some risks and I think they paid off. I'm all for artists maturing and showcasing something new but not too distant from their previous works.

Unknown is easily one of their best songs and I was really to see Mark fighting for it.

Overall this is a solid mini sonically and probably one I'll enjoy more as time passes.

i mean, this comeback made me wanna stan nct dream, although their overall song (except this comeback) aren’t my cup of tea at ALL. i really liked their storytime for this cb and i actually liked the songs, except unknown smoothie and breathing..🧍🏾‍♀️

Christa

u missed one ! its called breathing its another pretty song

Emily Finnegan

Unknown is so good!! I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. I will say, though, hearing Smoothie for the first time almost made me not want to check out the album as a whole 😅

Christa

I was hyped for this mature story era and even though smoothie's good I agree, I wish they had a song that followed the story they were building bc the lyrics for that are telling a drastically different story LOL. It also felt like a rushed song too it was a little tooo fast (esp the verses that vocal line verse was heaven) I want my min long vocal line bridge (I was praying dream wouldn't fall into the hybe 2-3 min song curse this album...)

ilays

Breathing was my favorite i’m glad they gave us a song over 4 minutes after a couple of them not reaching 3 minutes.

zuzi

i knew u were gonna hate the smoothie chorus 💀 you didnt do breathing aka the most vocal song from this album tho 😭😭😭

Christa

Like if they didn't have those chapter teasers I would be 100% content w smoothie

oh no you missed their last song called breathing! its a very pretty, slow song that mark, jeno, jaemin, and jisung participated in for the lyrics. but overall many people have made comments about wanting dream to stick to their bright concept but dream this comeback has made it clear that they participated in it the most they have ever before from choosing songs, to participating in the trailers story (renjun even attended extra meetings by himself for them), to writing lyrics and more. and seeing how smoothie talks about ignoring negative comments and unknown and breathing are about making it through difficult times and overall just growing up, i truly believe this album is the start of dream’s journey in representing their own stories in their music, and that it’s inevitable their music will take a darker and more mature turn as the members have grown so much and have their own issues and stories to tell. as a big fan of dream it was very clear this album was more personal to them. this all just makes me even more excited for what they have in the future and what we’ll see from the member’s personal stories!

Nooo you forgot to react to breathing

I'm so glad Mark really pushed for them to promote Unknown. Cool to see the behind content for choosing secondary promotional song. It's definitely my favorite on this mini. Then probably Breathing. Mark wrote and composed for Box, Unknown and Breathing (the lyrical content is definitely better on these songs). Jeno wrote and composed for Unknown and Breathing. Jaemin and Jisung wrote and composed for Breathing. It is cool to see them getting more involved - besides just Mark (I know they've had credits on previous albums, I'm just glad that they're continuing to do so. I felt so odd not loving Carat Cake because a lot of fans loved that one. Smoothie has grown on me.

I disliked smoothie’s chorus too! It just felt so lazyyy and then I get mad because after we have that lovely rnb breakdown in the 2nd verse and I’m like y’all couldn’t put that flavor into the chorus 😂😂

Kiara

smoothie has grown on me but on that first listen it literally ruined my whole day 😭 I wish the smoothie mv had a story that followed the chapter films as well, something more like that one teaser picture where they had like uniforms on and were standing in a straight line. otherwise I agree with everything you said at the end as well! I'm excited to see where nct dream goes next and hopefully see them in concert in newark again!

i loved the latter half of this album a lot and it was very comforting to listen to. i wasn't a fan of carat cake either due to the autotune and the lyrics, but suprisingly i loved box; i loved the production even though it is not typically the production that i enjoy. icantfeelanything definitely felt like an intro that had the sound that fits the album concept the most. i feel like smoothie wasn't bad, i just wish that the whole song had more of that rnb breakdown with haechan, chenle, and renjun and a more impactful chorus. overall, i did really like this mini and i loved the concept. those concept videos were so well made and you can tell a lot of thought went into making them, which made the result that much better.

I need someone to walk into SM gather all the producers/writers and tell them that they have singers. Competent, agile, emotive singers so stop making them chant nonsensical English words on choruses PLEASE! Here and there is cute and it’s becoming an SM signature and I don’t want to change that but when you have such skilled vocalist, choruses are meant to be melodic and vocally driven and taking it a step further they need to be title tracks. Which have shown to be well accepted by the general public with song like Hello Future, Broken Melodies, Candy. Smoothie which I think is okay just seems so safe and lazy at this point. Carat Cake I put with the Rizzness as song I could enjoy if the chorus didn’t make want to laugh and take me out of it.

Reagan 💚

lol i felt that. generally for NCT comebacks (any unit) i check out the album first before the title track to get a general sense of it and then watch the music video. i've found that i have a better experience that way. i will say though that the title track has a certain allure to it even if it takes more than one listen to understand why they chose to go that direction.

i’ve been waiting for this! i have to say this is def one of if not their most cohesive albums in terms of sound and message! for my personal preference i generally prefer brighter songs especially with dream’s music but i just cannot deny that the quality of this album is really up there so even though the songs by themselves are not my faves from them (except queen unknown), this is still one of my fave dream albums as a whole. it rly makes me look forward to their concert bc just imagining icantfeelanything as an opening song already makes me get GOOSEBUMPS! it feels like they needed to release this album for themselves and i’m so glad they did. loved to see how involved they were too so the album feels so much more personal. always such a pleasure to see dream showing their growth in artistry with every release 💚 thanks for the review!

Koko3op

Yess totally agree! I hope they don't regress for the next comeback.

zuzi

SAY IT LOUDER !!! i need old choruses back

kelly.lai

I LOL’d when you pretty much predicted the smoothie chorus while watching the chapter concept films (4min into it) 🤣

Christine Nguyen

I was honestly bothered by how noticeable the tuning was in this LMS especially so I just waited for your reaction and finished watching it with you. You might be right that something in the quality of Chenle's voice could make the tuning more apparent. I would love to hear this LMS w/o the tuning. YES that was one of my favorite Duet Services

ilays

Honestly i think both Carat Cake and Smoothie would’ve been fine if they were released in like a fun summer album where the songs are not taking themselves too seriously. But because the concept is so mysterious and cool, their lyrical content just doesn’t fit the overall cohesion of the rest of the songs. If Carat Cake was on an album like Beatbox or We Go Up or Candy i wouldn’t bat an eye, but because of what they’re going for in this album it feels out of place conceptually.

Dream just have these special songs - Teddy Bear, Graduation, Unknown (and many others) - that are so beautiful, and also feel very genuine and authentic to them even though their title track "sound" is Neo 💚

Jay Mèlanie

This comment right here!!! Btw Broken Melodies is "THAT" song, amazing arrangement vocally and on the production.

Jay Mèlanie

Great reaction, agree with a lot of what you were bringing to mind. I could not quite get into the title track, but the album has so much depth musically, vocally, and lyrically(I believe they have spoken on just like they have bright dreams, there are the dark sides as well; nightmares if you will or the realities of a dreams), so I appreciate the concept, and it seems very personal to them. Though I understand Smoothie has it's own supposed depth with what they are trying to say to the haters but I agree in regards to many of the choruses on quite a few KPOP songs where the versus, & pre chorus hooks you in, and then the hook just leaves you wondering what happened, it's almost liked they run out of ideas by the time they get to the chorus., but will give you a glimpse of hope again when the bridge comes in, which for SM most of the time is a time to give you a bit of soul and R&B. Same for Carat Cake, I agree with you, but it is quite catchy and I want to go for a jog listening to it, but the repetitive hooks seem so lazy. Collectively though I quite enjoyed the album.
