This was not at all how William had seen things going... None of it, really. He hadn't expected to find that his fiance's new job was something so strange; after he'd outed her, he hadn't expected to only have the woman's family on his side about it.

He'd had a few second thoughts before the backlash, to his credit. He'd loved Anna, and wanted what was best for her, and, for a moment, he'd thought that would be getting her out of that situation. He'd seen her texts, the ones telling him it wasn't what he thought, that it wasn't nearly as sexual a thing as he'd immediately assumed it was, and he'd ignored them all. He'd hoped her parents would just make her quit, and the whole experience would make her see that he was right, and she didn't need to worry about working at all.

Instead, they'd thrown her out, which wasn't what he'd intended, or wanted. He was too upset that night to care as much as he should, although, afterwards, he'd texted her and asked if she wanted to stay with him, provided she'd come to her senses and quit that disgusting job, obviously. After a night on her own, to think about it, he was certain she'd say yes, and they could put all this behind them...

She broke up with him. When he told the story to their friends, he'd tell them he was the one who'd dumped her, at least at first, but he still had the texts in his phone, and there was no denying she was the one who called it off. William fully expected their friends to be on his side about it, to agree that Anna shouldn't have gotten a job in the first place, when he'd told her she didn't need that, that he didn't really want her to, and certainly shouldn't have gotten a job like that, when she was about to be a married woman.

Not only did their mutual friends not side with him, they seemed more disgusted with his attitude, and what he'd done, than they were with her! They told him he was being old-fashioned, and a bully, and that he should be ashamed of himself. He agreed with the first, although he didn't consider it a bad thing... The rest seemed crazy to him, but they wouldn't back down.

He stopped hanging out with them - or, rather, they stopped inviting him to hang out with them, because they'd rather be able to invite Anna - but they were always there, at the places he liked to go to unwind. Anna wasn't always there, yet, even when she wasn't, they didn't seem to want him around.

It was just like high school, he told himself, and they were nothing more than a clique... He didn't need them. It was much harder making new friends than he'd realized, however, especially since the story of him being so overbearing he didn't want his girlfriend to even have a job started to get around. Anna's parents were still on his side, but it was starting to feel like they were the only ones.

Finally, he decided to head to a different town altogether, to start fresh. Maybe he'd gone about things with Anna a bit too quickly, and inelegantly, but he was in the right, ultimately, and he was done dealing with the dirty looks he felt like he was getting from everyone near his own age. He needed a new start, somewhere people just thought of him as the strong, powerful man he knew he was, where he could safely assume any lingering glances he received were more from someone checking him out than judging him because he wasn't as supportive of sex workers or whatever as they thought he should have been.

And he did get checked out quite a bit, he thought, probably more than he had back in his old town. It felt like almost any time he turned around, he caught some woman staring at him... He'd always been self conscious about his height, but that apparently didn't matter to a lot of the ladies here; if anything, it only seemed to entice them more, which was perfectly fine with him.
