I want to see a Legend of Zelda game where past-Gannon successfully corrupted Zelda, she dispatched him and imprisoned Link. Now present-Gannon has to defeat Evil Queen Zelda and rescue Link before Evil Queen Zelda fully corrupts Hyrule, breaking the cycle and plunging the world into an eternity of darkness. And to be clear, this is not a Gannon-is-the-good-guy game. Gannon is still a bad guy, but he's a bad guy with a vested interest in the cycle continuing and Hyrule not being plunged into an eternity of darkness ruled over by an evil Zelda.

Ngl, love that ad at the end. Yahtzee calling his boss a gigantic tit is the kind of positivity I need in the morning.

What a breath of fresh air and relief that Yahtzee and SW have the freedom to post a negative review of a Zelda game. This one seems to be fairly middling but everything else I've read seems to be very to mildly positive

I know I am in the minority, but I like Zelda games for their specific formula. I do not like the acclaimed Switch Zelda games outside of Links Awakening for this reason. Breath/Tears/Echoes are a different type of game, skinned to look like Zelda games. They remind me a lot of Super Mario 2 in this regard. If they released a Metroid game that was in a vast open world full of side quests and other nonsense and got rid of all the progression-based area gating... it would not be a Metroid game, it would be Far Cry with a Metroid skin, and I'd be mad about it just the same. I've bought two Zelda games now that do not qualify, to me, as Zelda games, and I don't think I am going to make this mistake again. I somehow foolishly thought Echoes was going to be more Link's Awakening, just with Zelda as the player character. Boy, I was wrong!

I also think it speaks to gaming industry cowardice that instead of trying to create a new IP to support unique gameplay mechanics, they shoehorn unique gameplay mechanics into an established franchise with well-established gameplay mechanics. I hate to sound like an old man shouting at squirrels in his yard, I enjoy innovative gameplay and I think it's important to iterate on formulas. But fully throwing them out, or warping them until they're unrecognizable, and then banking on nostalgia and stan culture for an existing IP to sell the game... feels like cheating, like laziness to me, too. Breath of the Wild remixed a bunch of components of other games into a package that people love, I get that it worked for a lot of people, but deep down the only original thing that game did was subvert the expectations of what a Zelda game is. It's just a Zelda skin on some other game, like Mario 2 all over again.

I'm female & 100% agree with Yahtzee about 'Echoes'. FFS - the Zelda from 'Tears' is a thousand times more active & has an insanely stronger personality as a cut-scene NPC than the 'send minions off to die'/do nothing 'heroine' of 'Echoes'. Turning Zelda into a plank of wood protagonist is an insult & extemely disappointing.
