Phenomenal video, Darren. As someone who is over 50, I remember the miniseries quite well. It was excellent, as is this show. I actually like the subtitiles, since it adds a level of seperation between the Western and Japanese characters. I wouldn't want to have a dub in English, and I would never want AI to morph actors' faces for ANY reason. The podcast host can get over himself. (I had another way of saying this, but it would be lost in translation...)

I was a little lukewarm to this remake of Shogun. As the original has its pros and cons versus this new one. The pros for the 1980s version was showing him learning the language. It was interesting dichotomy vs The new show that really sets that aside and instead favors the narrative from the Japanese side of things. The 1980s mini series felt like a mini-series. This new series feels like a movie. And it's not just because of the cinematography and the sets. I legitimately like the 1980s and this current version. But the 1980s was very much catering to a certain subset of viewer. No modern viewer is going to sit there and watch somebody learn a language. It is the most boring thing on the planet. This new series does a really good job of mixing the old and the new. And it's nice to see that they tone down the white Jesus aspect of the story. Blackthorne isn't some superhero in this story unlike the 1980s version. I mean admittedly that even the 1980s version wasn't as bad as say last samurai. But it's still treated John blackthorne as the savior. Ultimately I think I like both, but I like this new version a lot more simply because of the cinematography, and removing some of the more sillier aspects of the story so far. I was really going to be interested in how they handle getting toranaga out of the castle. Because the 1980s was full on lol.

my only issue with this series is it feels like the writers were told to read specific chapters instead of the whole book then write a script. Some of best scenes in the book were kinda glossed over or have a completely different feel to them with the changes made. I very much love the casting over all its pretty good. Never saw the 80s version i just reread the book about twice a year. I do hope it does well enough to encourage them bringing the other books to TV.
