tl;dr: most of you will be able to spend less money and keep the same benefits.

So, it's probably no secret that this Patreon campaign isn't doing as well as it was last year, and combined with some other things in my personal life that have made this a truly shitty year, I've been spending a lot of time thinking about how to address that.  The feedback I get most consistently is that people think that as it is right now, my tiers are too expensive for the benefits they unlock, and I can easily see their thinking, especially with the more story-focused feedback I've gotten from the 2 previous major arcs.

The conclusion I've come to is essentially the only one I really can come to in light of that feedback: I need to reduce prices.  So that's exactly what I'm going to do, starting in November.

However, I've also decided to heavily simplify this campaign - no longer will I have 7 different tiers with 6 different chapter permissions I have to manually update every release day; there's only going to be 2:

$5 tier: 40 chapters ahead of where the free releases are.  Essentially, this is going to be what the $20 tier is right now.

$10 tier: The ultra-special shiny mega tier where you get your name in the credits, plus the 40 chapters.  This is what the $25 tier is right now.

I understand that this is leaving the $1 and $3 patrons out in the cold a little, and for that, I do apologize.  Naturally, I would love continuing to give you an incentive to keep giving me money in any amount you want, as the campaign has been run thus far, but I think that keeping things simple like this is the best middle-ground for ensuring this campaign's sustainability and value.

Now, 'how is this going to work?' I hear you ask.  Well, Patreon doesn't exactly make that as easy as it could be.  I can't edit tier prices while there are people who are actively subscribed to them, but I can delete them, which will leave you still subscribed, but technically 'tier-less'.  You'll have to re-subscribe at for the new tiers once they've been launched.

As for when that's going to happen, that'll be on the 30th, six days from today, so that everyone can read the releases that are available at whatever tier they happen to be before the change eliminates some of those tiers.  There's no need to constantly check when it's been done, though, I'm going to send out a message to everyone still subscribed to update your pledge once it's over.  So make sure your notifications are on, and be sure to get your pledge updated before midnight on the 31st, so that you're not charged your old tier price on the 1st.

Thanks for making these changes, I know it sucks to have to reduce prices, but hopefully it works out for the best and ends up attracting more patrons.

It is what it is. Fortunately, I'm in a place where I can take this risk without too much worry, but it still took me a week to make this announcement after I made the decision. At the very least, I can look forward to not having to manually update chapter permissions anymore! =D

So what happens if we for some reason don't update our tier in the one dayish timeframe?

wardenraime

Patreon does allow you to make custom pledges, so I'd presume you would end up like someone who makes one of those. You would continue to make your current pledge, only you wouldn't have access to the chapters because I'll be setting the permissions on the chapters to only be accessed by those who are pledged to one of those two tiers instead of 'all patrons' to avoid someone making a $1 pledge in the future and gaining access to chapters when they shouldn't.

Have you considered publishing it on kindle? Maybe more readers would discover it that way

wardenraime

I've already decided to do that, it's just that I would want to heavily revise what's currently available before doing that, and in order to get it done in a timely manner, I have to pick up my current rate of revision. At this point, it's going to happen, it's more just a matter of when.

Doing everything to gain new readers is essential. You seem already doing that so keep it up. 1) if you are doing this full-time you need more income streams, patreon is too unreliable to give you a piece of mind. Investing in dividend stock will give you a more regular income, though it will be small it will be more reliable than patreon. Other than that I believe you should explore writing sideprojects, writing new stories on royal road. If they gain traction - great you just made another income stream that may be bigger than storm king one day. If not skip it and explore new stories until you find 1-2 stories that folks love to read. 2) You have improved your writing but I belive it is important to continue improvement of the quality. I especially would like to see better written characters, I believe you characters are decent with the exception of Gaius. Gaius is the only character that feels real and not fictional character, at least at times. I also believe writing scenes with great climaxes is needed for a story to reach next lvl. Having said that you have made clear improvement, it's just that when a story start to decease in engagement it's hard to return turn the momentum in your favor. If you continue to see decrease in patreon income keep positive outlook.

Hi warden. I used to be subscribed to this story when the tiers were very expensive. I just started reading again and I'm glad to see you lowered the price and I'm happy to support at a more reasonable level.

Still don’t see the chapters. I cancelled and renewed meanwhile and on the website i see the status „pending“. So Warden, maybe you have to do something?

wardenraime

There's honestly nothing I can do on my end which I haven't done, unfortunately. I still don't know what the issue is. Maybe whenever this 'pending' thing gets worked out? I think I'm going to contact support to see if they have any suggestions.

I was having the same issue, but it fixed itself as soon as patron billed me (as in actually sent me the email receipt) for November

JC

Works now after billing for me as well, thx
