Daily Short Story: Kyo 35 (Patreon)

Kyo stared at the book. She felt innate that the Summoning Codex stared back. Her tail and ears twitched as green fur rippled with curiosity. “Many fish?” Kyo finally directed at Nota.
“Indeed, there are many fish with delicious flavors in countless worlds,” Nota said, nodding as she adjusted her glasses to glint in the light. “The concept behind traveling is easy. Someone, or something, summons you. After you return, you send collected mana from the world and feed it to Eve. The more you feed her, the faster she wakes up.”
Kyo’s eyes stared intently at the Summoning Codex. It appeared to be attempting to sneak away. Boxing it in with a few slabs of space, she pondered. Fish. Collect mana. Fish tastier. Help elf. Get repaid. This deal is in my favor, but they have invested much in me already.
“Agree,” Kyo said, nodding at Nota. Both females. finished the meal cooked by Talos without another word.
“So, there are some basic ground rules. First, it is common to arrive in a world Eve has already visited. The Summoning Codex requires far less energy to pierce the barrier and deliver you to such places.” Nota said while floating upside down.
Kyo nodded and layered the space box trapping the Summoning Codex from escaping with another squared space. This book was tricky!
“Mana harvesting, how?” Kyo asked. It was one thing to harvest here in her world but quite another to assume the same method would work elsewhere.
“Things you kill can be deconstructed with space magic into their base mana. The stronger the creature, the stronger the mana harvested. Remember the grinding trick?” Nota replied.
“Ah!” Kyo exclaimed. “Un, good trick.”
“Second, it is common to acquire power from the world. It can be a cursed legendary sword, a technological AI chip, or another zillion option. Think carefully because if you collect a hodgepodge removing and reconstructing your soul is almost impossible.” Nota cautioned. “At least until Eve is awakened.”
Kyo was thrilled. The possibility of getting strong fishing powers was incredible!
“Start!” Kyo said, staring at Xeraphiel with undisguised greed.
“Are you sure this is a good choice, Nota?” Xeraphiel asked. “I’m certain I can recommend some more efficient demonic assistance.”
“Kyo. Squish.” Nota said, pointing at the arm-sized rat Xeraphiel resembled.
Kyo glared at the four-leg, and space magic crushed the creature into a pulp. She gasped in amazement as the four-leg’s body moved into an entire state. A few minutes later, Nota had to place a restraining hand on Kyo due to the demon’s pleading.
“Do you have any more problems with my choice, Xeraphiel?” Nota asked in a sweet tone.
The demon shuddered and said, “N-no, mistress. N-nothing to say. I b-beg forgiveness!”
“Excellent. You are forgiven. Begin the process.” Nota said with a kind smile that seemed more demonic than the demon!
