Thanks to my Patrons, I was able to make some investments in my animation process that will really help to improve my speed and quality!

As mentioned in a previous post, I decided to switch to a GPU rendering engine.  I haven't entirely decided on which one I'll be using but, at the moment, I'm leaning towards Redshift based on its speed and features.  I'm planning on using it for the duration of this project, which seems to be on schedule for release by the end of the month.  And, if I'm satisfied with the results, I'll buy the license for it to remove the watermark.

As part of the GPU rendering solution, I invested in an RTX 2080 Ti graphics card.  Using that card, this scene only took 4 mins per frame to render in a single pass!  I'm sure that will increase a bit as I add more props and complexity to the background.  That might not sound all that fast, but a similar scene using my old rendering engine and a similar noise threshold would have taken at least 5 to 10 times as long.

The most exciting thing about this for me is that I can finally use real 3D fur!  In all of my previous animations, I had to use an environmental effect to create the fur.  That method was fast and clean, but the strands weren't visible to the main rendering engine, so I always had to do some cleaver compositing to make it fit the rest of the scene.

Speaking of fur, I invested in a new plugin (Ornatrix) to create the fur.  It's a lot more powerful and easier to use than my previous solution, and has very good integration with Redshift.  I've only been working with it for a few days, and I'm already super happy with the results!

Enjoy!
