Hey everyone!

I wanted to take a moment and ask you guys about your feelings on utilizing AI in my work.

The age of AI is upon us, for better or for worse. It presents both a powerful tool, and a uniquely bizarre threat to creatives.

For reference: I am very cautious about the use of AI, as I feel it can be taken as a pathway to unethical behavior very easily. Particularly when it's used to replace the work of an artist.

That being said, as a creator, AI tools like image creation can be helpful in offloading busy work to a computer, leaving me more time to focus on the creative aspects of my work like writing and voice acting.

After making audio stories multiple times a month for 4 years, it can be difficult finding and assembling new icons for stories that don't reuse the same assets over and over, still fit the theme, and look generally appealing.

Utilizing AI image creation allows me more creative flexibility to create more specified icons for stories, which expensive and generic stock images (which I still pay for and use) might not be curated to fill.

(I.E. A fat superhero, a fat man in fantasy situations, etc.)

I also recently utilized a text-to-speech tool for a recent story for some additional dialogue from a few characters to supplement my voice acting, though I'm not at all interested in using that to any extensive degree.

Not only would that be lazy, it would also undermine the voice acting aspect of what I do; arguably what you're all here for.

But I want to hear your thoughts! I wouldn't want to implement it if you all felt uncomfortable, as you're the ones paying for the content.

So:

Are you comfortable with me utilizing AI for my key art? Utilizing it for background character voices? Is it not that big a deal to you? What are some thoughts you have regarding the way I implement it?

Any which way you feel, please let me know in the comments below!

Thank you all, I appreciate your input!

AI images would be a welcome addition. If you could have them animated to expand as your story progresses, that would be amazing. Don't know if it can be done and to what expense, but what a thought!

The AI acting was a welcome addition. You’re a great voice actor but having multiple voices (even if they lack the accurate realism) instead of just yours in different accents makes it more immersive and less of a “one man show” deal.

I think so long as you’re careful with regards and just to add to your work and not replace, I think can be a good diea

I will always prefer the idea of artists being hired and paid for over AI. But I do also understand that this is a one man show, that there is only so much you can do, that there’s only so much money coming in, and commissioning three icons a week is an expense that might not be tolerable. So my personal preference is AI art for icons, fine, AI voice modulation… wait until the tech improves.

While I can understand why you'd use it, AI in art is so unethical I can't say I'm comfortable...

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’ll admit, as a freelance artist (my other job), it’s definitely a tenuous concept for me, and one I’ve gone back and forth on a lot.

I think ai is a slippery slope. Once you use it for one facet there could be a push to use it elsewhere. While i understand youre a one man show, i think use of AI very sparingly would be something i could be comfortable with. As a graphic artist whose work is directly threatened by AI i cant ever say i support it but i could tolerate its use as a supplement. It is comforting that AI is as good as it is ever going to be right now tho. So that's a win for artists i suppose.
