That show that sounded sorta perfect on paper collapses under it's own ambition while also feeling super reductive about aging, prostates, and how girls are pretty... The numbers weren't dreadful, but it felt like a mercy kill to end the series so quickly.

Twenty Good Years - Unaired 2006 Pilot Director's Cut

John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor, Heather Burns, Jake Sandvig, Judith Light, Kevin Chamberlin Directed by Terry Hughes John Lithgow plays John Mason, a surgeon forced into semi-retirement, while Jeffrey Tambor was Jeffrey Pyne, a judge. The comedy show was about two old friends that appeared to be polar opposites in many situations. One thing they agreed upon, however, is that life is short and both men vowed to live every day like it is their last, since they figured at their age, they only had "twenty good years" to live. Shenanigans ensue (I know, I promised) *The full order of 13 episodes were finished although 9 of them have never aired. The show was pulled after 4 showings but not cancelled until after Upfronts the following May. The reviews were absolutely brutal and most fans of these actors agreed they each deserved better. NBC's other new sitcom, 30 Rock, was released this season and while not a hit, was given room to grow and it's find it's place. NBC was clearly stacking their new shows with big actors and it's kind of a shame this one never quite found it's beats. Part of the problem is that it doesn't quite feel like planet earth, but played so opposite of something like 3rd Rock from the Sun. Enjoy! mileage may vary. Judith Light is wonderful.
