A good friend had gifted me a piece of alabaster over a year ago, but I hadn't found the time to start carving. I knew I wanted a Tsathoggua to compliment the soapstone Cthulhu I previously carved, and so (with some new-found free time) I began plotting out the basic shape.

Of all the Gods of the Mythos, Tsathoggua is the most content with staying at home and being chill. I figure now is the ideal time to channel that outlook, so I've plunged ahead with my sculpt and am pretty darned happy with how he is shaping up. My original design for this actually looked a bit like the fertility idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but sometimes stone has a funny way of telling you what it wants to be. So my Tsathoggua has a sort of catfish head on a tardigrade body, but the toad-like aspect and protruding tongue (from Clark Ashton Smith's description) are still present!

The March Leaves are mailing out starting tomorrow. As always I hope you like them!

I'm glad you said tardigrade since that is where my brain went when I first saw the carving :D.

Has anyone read the Michael Shea story Tsathoggua? The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast has a fantastic episode devoted to it with Patton Oswalt as guest host. I have been thinking about his version of the God. Clark Ashton Smith and Lovecraft each had their own conceptions of what Tsathoggua looked like, but Shea adds his own idea of what Tsathoggua does with his victims. It is worth seeking out!
