Well I mean, it's not the exam makers' fault if a mage overestimates themselves, thinks they can make it through the first class mage exam and then dies. It's not like they're forcing these mages to do this exam, and it's very transparently communicated that many die in them so you go in at your own risk.

Yeah I get that, my main point was that these exams might be the reason why there's fewer mages now. Many try to reach TOO high and end up dying when there's other areas they could help in with their powers. I just think it's inefficient to just LET them die. I'd rather they have people watching over the exam who are able to save those nearing death. Maybe have a penalty where they can't take the exam again for many more years than just 3 if they fail/almost die. I understand that they warn them about death beforehand, but I feel it would just be better if the possibility of death is eliminated as a whole. Then you'll have many more mages of many varying strengths that are able to protect people.
